Celebrating Language & the Land

In his introduction to Language of the Land, Patrick Barkham, Presi
dent of the Norfolk Wildlife Trust says: “Spending time in a small
group outdoors is a lovely thing to do. It is an act of openness and
generosity, and from it stems open and generous writing. You’ll find
it in these pages.”.

Led by the poet Jonathan Ward, groups of writers have ventured
into the diverse landscape around Cley-next-the-Sea in Norfolk,
through the seasons of a number of years, facing all weathers, invit
ed to pay respectful attention to what was there and to record their
experiences and the memories and emotions evoked by them.
Here, they have collaborated in bringing together a selection of
their words in the form of original poems, essays and tales. The
contributions are by turns joyful, perceptive, poignant, and touched
with humour. The very act of writing deepens one’s experience, and
a purpose of this book is to encourage others to discover the value
of doing the same in their own voice.

If a single theme emerges from this collection, it is a sense that this
is our land, it is remarkable, and in the sharing of our cherishing it,
we add to its protection for the sake of all who live near or come to
visit this special place that is North Norfolk.

The book is being sold in support of the Norfolk Wildlife Trust.
