John Dalton, Meteorology And Kendal Heritage Open Days Talk

Curatorial Talk on Quaker Tapestry Museum’s new exhibition on John Dalton FRS, Meteorology and Kendal.

Our new Places of Science exhibition, funded by the Royal Society, explores John Dalton FRS’s connection to the town of Kendal and how he came to make the meteorological observations of the Lakeland towns, villages and mountains that later formed the basis for the OS maps of the area.

Several local schools came in for workshops to learn about John Dalton’s life and work and how his observations might be helpful in monitoring climate change today. They made their own meteorological observations back at school and then collaborated with local textile artist, Donna Campbell to create a wall hanging, now in the exhibition.

In this talk on John Dalton, Curatorial Assistant, Francesca Vine will be exploring his early life and connection to Kendal, as well as looking at on his work on Meteorology, including his original publication, Meteorological Observations and Essays, in greater depth.

Access
We have a small car park on site which can be accessed from Stramongate. There is a disabled parking space available in the car park. When the car park is full Kendal’s multi-storey car park is 100 yards away from the museum.

Directions
Quaker Tapestry Museum is very close to Kendal town centre. Just 2 minutes walk from the bus and 6 minutes walk from the train stations. Step-free access to the building is via the Stramongate entrance.
